Founded in 1957, SFFILM connects and inspires audiences, students and teachers, and filmmakers to ensure independent voices in film are welcomed, heard, and given the resources to thrive. The three pillars of our work—exhibition, artist development and education—lead the way, with a firm eye towards diverse perspectives, accessible programs, meaningful impact, and joyful community building.
Our annual film exhibition program features the San Francisco International Film Festival, Doc Stories showcase, plus Bay Area premieres and special events reaching approximately 45,000 people annually. As part of SFFILM’s exhibition programming, the Science on Screen Award is presented to a film during the SF Int’l Film Festival in the spring, and the Science in Cinema Prize is presented to a film in the fall season as part of the Sloan Science in Cinema Initiative for their compelling depiction of scientific themes or characters in narrative feature films. Our Artist Development program, SFFILM Makers, is the home of independent filmmaking in the Bay Area with direct artist grants, residencies, and tailored support for a new generation of films and filmmakers. As part of its granting program, Makers supports two films in development with the SFFILM Sloan Science in Cinema Fellowship and three to four films in early development every two years with the SFFILM Sloan Stories of Science Development Fund. Both of these grants provide additional opportunities for SFFILM to offer tailored resources to filmmakers in earlier stages of developing screenplays that explore science through the cinematic language of storytelling. Lastly, the SFFILM Education programs bring special screenings, workshops, camps, and learning opportunities to more than 18,000 Bay Area students and educators annually, all designed by SFFILM Education to cultivate media literacy, global citizenship, and a lifelong love of movies.
